California Department of Food and Agriculture Registers Scotts ® EveryDrop ® to Help Residents Reduce Water Use in Lawns and Landscapes

Innovation is part of broader company campaign to give Californians tools and tips to meet aggressive water reduction targets.

June 2, 2015, Sacramento, CA – Today, the California Department of Food and Agriculture approved the registration for Scotts ® EveryDrop ®, an innovative consumer product that helps residents conserve water.

In April, Governor Jerry Brown declared the first-ever statewide water restrictions aimed at reducing water usage by 25 percent. The declaration, in recognition of the long-term and far-reaching drought conditions that persist across California, directs agencies to incentivize water saving technologies as homeowners seek ways to reduce water use and eliminate water waste.

Often times in dry conditions, soils compact and cause available rain or irrigation water to bead on the surface and be wasted. EveryDrop ® is a watering agent that uses an innovative surfactant technology to help available water penetrate the soil more easily and evenly so it can better reach the roots zone and hydrate the plant— see product demonstration here. Surfactants have long been available to commercial landscapers and golf course managers. The technology will now be available in the consumer space and allows homeowners to get great results in their lawns and reduce their irrigation by up to 25 percent.

“Scotts pledged itself to a new era of water consciousness several years ago,” said Jim Hagedorn, Chairman and CEO of ScottsMiracle-Gro. “We’ve met with Governor Brown and we have pledged to create the tools necessary for homeowners to actively dial back water use in their lawns and landscapes. New product development and the introduction of EveryDrop ® is part of that commitment. We’ve been developing this for years and as we have watched the drought intensify, we knew that breakthrough technology was required. Water is not an infinite source, every drop counts, and we all have to do our part to use water in more efficient ways.”

EveryDrop ® is one of many products and consumer tips that Scotts is providing to help Californians meet water reduction mandates. The campaign (http://scottsmiraclegro.com/california/) will focus on education and innovation and includes select advertising, new community partnerships and research aimed at protecting California’s water resources.

“There is no one magic solution to get us through this drought. Some residents may choose drought tolerant plants over the more traditional lawn. But we know those who want to keep their lawn also want to do their part in meeting water reduction targets. Our job is to do what we can to help residents achieve that goal and save water.”

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (NYSE: SMG), is home of the world's leading branded consumer lawn and garden products. Scotts plans to distribute EveryDrop ® across the state as early as August of 2015.
