Scotts Receives Certification of Its Corporate Environmental Management Program

MARYSVILLE, Ohio, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Scotts Company (NYSE: SMG) today announced that its Corporate Environmental Management Program has been certified to the ISO 14001 international environmental management standard. It is the highest standard by which companies across the globe are judged for their commitment to environmental stewardship.

"Receiving this prestigious certification validates our company's resolve to be a leader in pollution prevention and regulatory compliance on a global basis," said Michael P. Kelty, vice chairman and executive vice president of The Scotts Company. "But we're certainly not going to let our efforts stop here. We must continually improve our environmental management program, which in turn will result in more improvements to our environmental record.

"As the nation's leading lawn and garden products company, we are seriously committed to not only protect the environment but also the health and safety of our associates and the consumers who use our products," continued Kelty.

ISO 14001 is a standard under which independent auditors evaluate a company's environmental processes and system performance. The program was established in 1996 when the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) formed the ANSI-RAB National Accreditation Program.

An independent firm conducted a series of document reviews, site visits and audits that examined the company's environmental management procedures and operations to determine its conformance to ISO standards. Issues such as technical capabilities, training and experience of personnel, internal auditing procedures, regulatory compliance and the operational impact on the environment were evaluated during the process.

"Our stewardship commitment begins with the raw materials we purchase and continues through the manufacturing, warehousing and distribution processes," said Gary Daugherty, director of corporate environmental management at Scotts. "Every aspect of our environmental program was closely scrutinized while we were being considered for certification."

"Through continued investment and by upgrading our facilities to meet advancements in technology, we have ensured that the environmental impact of our operations on surrounding communities will be minimal," concluded Daugherty.

Smithers Quality Assessments Inc., an independent accrediting agency certified by RAB, conducted the extensive audit.
